The inaugural new one from the best-selling ring of the ten is just the kind of song that has made the Hanna, AB. the operative class bill of choice; worldwide.
Taken from the insanely successful Dark Horse album, it shows Chad Kroeger's brilliance in writing perfect slice-of-life vignettes. Malign the circle as often as you want; the power to tell the tale of hanging out with friends after 'being down at the seedy bar, listening to CCR.
Had a few to "Suzie Q" this afternoon."
In one exactly timed tune, he's got weed-smoking; drinking until 6 a.m. with friends; Cheech & Chong; being poor; fighting with the landlord; living on the boundary of the human speed and so on. Frankly, it's yet another ridiculously catchy and- in my humble opinion - taking the water out of itself track that this band often slides into its more serious *** rock. The former thing it is is crossover perfection. If this tune can't be seeded into country radio I'd be amazed. It's got the powerful elements to appeal there too, all the way down to the twanging guitar.
In the past, often ridiculously pretentious acts such as Led zeppelin took pot shots at themselves to great effect - listened to "Hot Dog" or "The Crunge" lately? - and it looks like Nickelback can too. This form of thing only comes from a place of real authority and, yeah, perhaps even arrogance.
But, love 'em or hate 'em, you only know as this Spring warms up round the world, the gang's going to be poppin' the top off a stale one "This Afternoon."
And granted the pretentious and neutered nature of so much indie rock around right now, maybe this is precisely why Mr. Kroeger's got the formula for success: Keep It Simple, Stupid and, by all means, with a beat your can chug a six down to. When the day comes that a jukebox musical is produced using this band's backline story and songs, "This Afternoon" will be correct in there with "Photograph" and "Rockstar."
'Nuff said.
